(North Bay, Ontario, March 23, 2022) Although the snow depth has reduced considerably throughout the watershed in the past week, the snow water equivalency hasn’t changed much. Most of the moisture is still stored on the landscape, just more compacted according to the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority which measures the snow pack as part of its flood forecasting program.
“The average snow depth for the three sites is 27.7 cm, a 24.0 cm decrease from the March 15 measurements, and the average water equivalence for the three sites is 89.0 mm, a 6.0 mm decrease from last week,” said Angela Mills NBMCA’s Water Resources Specialist. “We will continue our monitoring throughout the next few months”, she added.
NBMCA is now measuring the snow pack weekly, to monitor conditions leading up to and during the spring freshet. This is a supplementary survey so there will only be comparisons to last week’s measurements. The per cent normal data will be calculated for the next snow survey which takes place April 1.
Snow is measured for depth and water equivalence at three locations in the watershed.
