History of local story hikes

Several years ago, a group called Community Oriented Outdoor Literacy approached NBMCA with the idea of installing story books on Conservation Area trails. Time in the outdoors is important! The approach is aimed to bridge the gap between outdoor exploration and literacy development, encouraging individuals of all ages to venture out and discover the wonders of nature while improving their reading abilities.  This combination fosters a deeper connection between people, nature, and written word.

There is mounting evidence that time spent in nature has many benefits to well-being. The concept of a book outdoors provides a simple and fun way for families to read and reflect on the story together while enjoying a trail walk. Taking in some fresh air can improve our mental health, sharpen our cognition and helps to feel connected to our natural environment.

So why not grab a backpack, lace up those hiking boots, and get ready to embark on an adventure that will leave you feeling inspired, refreshed, and connected to the natural world?
