In 2004, the Nipissing Botanical Gardens and the Heritage Gardeners sparked an idea: to create, preserve, and identify green spaces filled with plantings and trees for research, education, and ornamental purposes. Concerns about erosion, flooding, and pollution in Chippewa Creek led the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority and the City of North Bay to initiate improvement projects starting in 1978. By 2010, these four organizations joined forces and sought funding from the RBC Blue Water Project to align their visions. Our collaborative effort aimed to enhance the creek's water quality through thoughtful plantings and establish a watershed education program to encourage continued stewardship. This partnership paved the way for the creation of the Chippewa Creek EcoPath!
Today, the Chippewa Creek EcoPath is a thriving oasis in the heart of North Bay, with meters of restored creek shoreline, native plant species, and educational signage. The project has not only improved water quality but also provided a unique outdoor classroom for students and community members to learn about sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. With its scenic walking trails, picnic areas, and vibrant gardens, the EcoPath has become a beloved destination for nature lovers and families alike. As a testament to the power of collaboration, the Chippewa Creek EcoPath serves as a shining example of what can be achieved when dedicated individuals and organizations come together to make a positive impact on their community.
