Chippewa Creek Project will Reduce Flood Risk, Enhance City's Active Transportation Network
(North Bay, July 29, 2021) The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority will begin work next week on the remediation of 45m of Chippewa Creek at Oak St and reestablish the Kinsmen Trail link across the creek with a new pedestrian bridge.
“The benefits to the residents of North Bay are two-fold; the channel work will repair streambank erosion and help alleviate upstream flood hazards. The new pedestrian bridge will provide a significant enhancement to the City’s active transportation network,” said Dave Mendicino, Chair of the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA).

A wave of thunderstorms are forecast by Environment Canada to bring 30-50mm of rain, possibly more in some areas, this evening and overnight adding to watercourses that are already at or above normal for this time of year. These conditions have prompted the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority to issue a Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook for the watershed.

Significant local rainfall amounts have been received around the City of North Bay due to the ongoing thunderstorms in the area, prompting the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority to issue a Flood Warning for Chippewa Creek and a Water Safety Statement for the remainder of the watershed.

Although local watercourses within NBMCA’s jurisdiction are at or below average for this time of year, Environment Canada’s warnings of 25 to 50 mm of rain this evening and an additional 25 mm Thursday is prompting the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority to issue a Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook for the watershed.
